Summer Edition
Bringing sunshine and smiles to kids in the Cardiac ICU
Every summer, dozens of children — from newborns to teens — spend their days at BC Children’s Hospital recovering from heart surgery in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). For many, it’s their first summer — or their first time away from home — and it’s spent under the bright lights of hospital care.
The Heart Box Project: Summer Edition is our way of saying: You are not alone.
Each lovingly assembled box is filled with thoughtful items to bring a little joy, comfort, and distraction to kids during a difficult time. Whether they’re recovering from a recent surgery or facing one in the days ahead, these small gestures go a long way in lifting spirits — for both the children and their families.
What’s Inside a Summer Heart Box?
We carefully select items that are soft, calming, and suitable for a wide range of ages and medical needs.
Each box typically includes:
- Soft summer pajamas or hospital-friendly sleepwear
- A small plush toy or comfort stuffie
- Gentle board or picture books
- Easy, low-mess arts and crafts
- Fidget or sensory toys
- Warm fuzzy socks (yes, even in summer!)
- Allergy-friendly treats
- A heart-themed keepsake
- A handwritten note of encouragement

Why We Started
The Heart Box Project was inspired by my son Winston who spent a few summers in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
We know how isolating, stressful, and emotionally heavy that time can be. We wanted to create something that could bring a moment of comfort — a reminder that someone is thinking of you, cheering you on, and holding your heart close.
Our Commitment, All Year Round
Every week — all year long — we quietly deliver 3 to 5 Heart Boxes to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at BC Children’s Hospital. These boxes offer a moment of care and comfort to families during some of their most difficult days.
But summer is different.
With typically 5+ surgeries a week, the CICU is at its busiest. That’s why our Summer Edition is a special initiative: a donor-powered effort to create 10 to 20 Heart Boxes that can be delivered in bulk and ready to go.
These extra boxes help us meet increased need and ensure no child is left out during this busy time.
This edition of the project is 100% powered by donors like you.
Your support helps us fill these boxes with thoughtful, high-quality, comforting items — and send love where it’s needed most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who receives the Heart Boxes?
Heart Boxes are delivered to children of all ages — from newborns to teens — who are spending time in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at BC Children’s Hospital.
In the winter months, most are recovering from emergency surgeries or newly diagnosed congenital heart defects.
How often are boxes delivered?
We deliver 3–5 boxes every week year-round.
During the winter and now the summer, we create a bulk delivery of 10–20 boxes to support the hospital during its busiest season — powered entirely by donations.
What types of items can I donate?
We’re looking for new, unwrapped items that are comforting, low-sensory, and hospital-safe. Some of our most appreciated items include:
- Pajamas or sleepwear (infant to teen sizes)

- Individually wrapped, allergy-friendly treats
- Uplifting notes or cards
See our full [wishlist here] or email us for suggestions!
Can I donate gently used items?
Unfortunately, no. Due to infection control policies in the CICU, we can only accept brand new, unused items with original packaging or tags.
Can I include a note or card in my donation?
Yes, please! Cards or notes with messages of encouragement, hope, or love are some of the most cherished parts of a Heart Box. You’re welcome to write your own or download our card template here.
Where can I drop off my donation?
We have a few donation drop-off points throughout the Lower Mainland. Email us at saitken@childrensheartnetwork.org to coordinate a drop-off.
Can I donate money instead of items?
Absolutely! Financial gifts help us purchase high-need or missing items, especially in specific sizes or categories. You can sponsor an entire Heart Box, or contribute any amount via CanadaHelps.
How much is it to sponsor one Heart Box?
We typically spend $45-60 per box on items alone.
Can I see where the donations go?
We share updates, photos, and stories (while respecting patient privacy) on Instagram: @childrensheartnetwork. Follow along to see your donations in action!
