As a member of the CHN volunteer team, your commitment to the organization is priceless. By volunteering your time, you are not only filling an important position in our organization, but you are also assisting us in carrying out our mission. The work of CHN would not be possible without our team of volunteers who offer their skills, experience, and time.

Who are our volunteers?
Most are parents, grandparents, and siblings from all across the province helping from their homes and within their communities. Some are students from post-secondary institutions looking for meaningful experiences. Some are professionals who bring their talents and hobbies to our families and children as guest speakers.

What do our volunteers do?
Our volunteers get involved in various ways, including helping at events, collecting donations for the CHN Wine and Dinner Gala, organizing parent coffee groups, planning community fundraisers, and serving on one of our committees. Volunteers also join the Board and help guide CHN to ensure we fulfill our mission to provide support, education, and information to children and families living with heart disease.

If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail
Fundraisers planned by volunteers are an important source of funds that help us continue our programs for children and families. They also help raise awareness about congenital heart disease and build support and community. If you are interested in organizing a fundraiser or have any questions, please contact

Volunteer fundraisers can be as simple as a birthday wish or a bake sale. Here are some simple fundraising ideas:
Host a party. Gather your friends and family together to celebrate a special occasion like a holiday, your birthday, or even the anniversary of a child’s surgery. Instead of gifts, ask your guests to bring a donation for CHN. Many children prefer to have their birthday guests make a donation in lieu of receiving gifts [add link to fundraising heart heroes] This is a great way to celebrate your special day while promoting and supporting the work of CHN.

Hold a bake sale. Coordinate a bake sale at your school, workplace, or community centre to raise money for Children’s Heart Network. Promote that buying your treats will benefit children supported by CHN. Deck out your tables in the colors of red and white and decorate your treats with hearts to celebrate CHN!

Make a lemonade stand. When the weather is hot, a lemonade stand is a fun way for kids to raise some money. [add link to lemonade stand]
Organize a recycling program at your workplace and donate funds raised to CHN. [add link]
Ask a restaurant or bakery in your community to donate proceeds from a particular menu item for a month.
Organize a dance-a-thon (or yoga-a-thon or zumba-a-thon—a “thon” of any sort!) at your child’s school or local community centre. Charge a small fee and ask participants to collect pledges for Children’s Heart Network in support of their efforts.
Look into holding an office-wide dress down day to benefit the Children’s Heart Network.
Organize a garage sale or community yard sale and donate the profits to the Children’s Heart Network.
Organize a car wash.
Ask the manager at your favorite restaurant or pub if they would be willing to co-host a fundraising event or pub night in support of Children’s Heart Network (e.g., 10% of proceeds from a specific night). [add link to Fountainhead Pub]
Host a bingo night or a basketball or tennis tournament. It’s a great way to build community, have fun, and raise some money.

Birthday Gift Donations
Chloe Isaac decided to do something very special for her 8th birthday party. In memory of her adored cousin Mila, she had her friends come and celebrate with her at Pony Meadows and suggested they forego bringing birthday gifts and instead make a donation to the Children’s Heart Network. Chloe’s friends and family raised $550!

Rhys Isaac had his 6th birthday at the Extreme Air Trampoline Park. Instead of bringing him gifts, he asked his friends and family to make donations to CHN in memory of his cousin Mila. Rhys and Mila are pictured here at a family barbeque in the summer of 2012. He raised $485! Rhys said he wanted the contributions to go to something that “would make Mila really happy.” The money he raised goes directly toward sending kids with congenital heart disease to summer camp.

For Will Hick’s 12th birthday, he invited 20 friends to play football, soccer, and British bulldog in a local park. Instead of gifts, he asked his 20 friends to bring a donation for the Children’s Heart Network. He has a good friend, Danielle Aitken, who had heart surgery when she was a baby. Will raised $620.

Lemonade Stand
Sister and brother team Louisa and Douglas Cassidy of Vancouver ran a lemonade stand to raise funds to support CHN. Louisa learned of the Heart Network through her friend Rhys, whose cousin Mila had heart disease.

Recycling with Heart
Tanya Lawes (mom to heart child Layna Lawes) noticed that lots of bottles and cans were getting thrown in the garbage at their family-run business Bridge Street Car Wash in Princeton, BC. So she put a special recycling box out with a sign telling their customers that all the proceeds would go to the Children’s Heart Network.

Pub Night Fundraiser
Fountainhead Pub in Vancouver donated $857 from a recent fundraiser.

Jewellery Sales
Hege Hoegler has sold well over 800 heart bracelets since she decided to do something to raise money for the Children’s Heart Network. These sterling silver heart bracelets are $15 and are available at CHN events or in the Heart Centre at BC Children’s Hospital. If you are interested in selling bracelets and necklaces in support of CHN, please contact

Half Marathon and 5 KM Run
Every year, the Children’s Heart Network participates in the Scotia Bank Half Marathan. In 2014, cardiologist Dr Shu Sanatani led a team that ran the half marathon while others participated in the 5 km run at Stanley Park. Dr Sanatani and his team raised $5332 for Children’s Heart Network.
