Presented by Dr. Winnie Chung, Registered Psychologist, Medical Psychology, BC Children’s Hospital
Topic
The experience of trauma is a significantly challenging reality for many children, youth, and families impacted by a heart condition. In this presentation, Dr. Chung will provide information on mental health symptoms related to stress and trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She will discuss ways to support children and youth in coping with their heart condition and medical procedures, and ways to minimize risk for developing longer-term trauma-related mental health symptoms. She will also share strategies to support parents’ coping and adjustment as they care for their children with a heart condition, and discuss ways to access mental health support for children, youth, and parents.
