Session 1: Vaccinations and Flu Shots for Babies and Children

Our first CHN parent education session was a session on flu shots and vaccines by Annie Lau from the BC Children’s Hospital’s Family Immunization Clinic.

Some of the areas discussed were:

  • vaccine basics
  • what are vaccines
  • how do vaccines work
  • why vaccinate
  • what if you choose not to vaccinate
  • what is the safety of the vaccines

Annie Lau, BC Children’s Hospital’s Family Immunization Clinic

Annie Lau is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Science degree in nursing and an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia School of Nursing. She has been the health resource nurse at the BC Children’s Hospital Family Immunization Clinic since its inauguration in October 2017.

Annie’s clinical experience spans widely, from acute hospital settings to her practice specialty in public health. She has held roles with Vancouver Coastal Health, including, but not limited to, clinical practice lead and clinical educator. She also singlehandedly designed and launched a provincially mandated early childhood vision screening program for the City of Vancouver.

Annie has received an award from the College of Registered Nurses of BC for excellence in clinical practice. She has over 20 years of experience in communicable disease prevention and immunization services for all age groups. She is also a published author; her current research interests include SIDS and infant sleep safety.
